I am broadly interested in using mathematics to understand real-world problems, especially challenges arising in industry. My work mainly involves modelling of continuous systems via partial differential equations, and solutions using asymptotics and numerical methods. For my PhD, I am working with BBOXX to model charge and discharge of lead-acid batteries for off-grid applications in sub-Saharan Africa. While these batteries offer a cheap and reliabe solution to the energy storage problem, they are known to degrade over a period of 3-5 years. We are working to understand how to design and manage the systems, both during charge and discharge, in order to minimise this degradation.
